脱口美语ITALKBAY<italkbay@gmail.com> 6:58:35 PMHi Everyone! Happy Sunday! Did you have a nice weekend so far? Well, we will have some fun here learning English. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 6:59:07 PMHi Everyone! Today we're going to start off by talking about apartments! |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 6:59:55 PMHere's the first half of the dialog: Do you have an apartment available? Blanca: Hello. I'm calling about the apartment you advertised. Manager: Yes. What kind of apartment are you interested in? Blanca: I'm interested in a one-bedroom. Do you have any available? Manager: Yes. I have one. When do you need it? Blanca: Sometime around next week. What can you tell me about this apartment? Manager: Well, it's a one-bedroom apartment. The monthly rent is $650, with a $300 security deposit. You pay electricity only. Gas and water is included. Both the heat and stove are gas. You'll be assigned a sheltered parking space at no extra charge. And...that's probably it. |
Alice(864941079) 7:00:03 PMmorning ,everyone |
脱口美语ITALKBAY<italkbay@gmail.com> 7:01:02 PMNick, first what's the difference between a house and an apartment ? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:01:47 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:02:31 PMAn apartment is usually in a larger building. An apartment building may have many apartments in it. A house is a stand alone building. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:02:51 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:03:12 PMCan you fill in the blank? An apartment is a place where people pay to live. You don’t buy an apartment you_______ an apartment. |
George(1242705207) 7:03:59 PM? |
Alice(864941079) 7:04:08 PMrent? |
George(1242705207) 7:04:12 PMfor? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:04:21 PMGood job Alice! You rent an apartment. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:04:33 PMRent is money you pay each month to use something. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:04:48 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:04:52 PMWhat are some other things you can rent? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:05:00 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:05:17 PMcar,television. |
Alice(864941079) 7:05:23 PMbook, bicycle |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:05:31 PMHere's a house on the left and apartment building on the right |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:05:51 PMThat's right! You can rent a car, a video, all kinds of things. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:06:03 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:06:24 PM“One-bedroom” is short for “one-bedroom apartment.” A one-bedroom apartment usually has a kitchenette and living room. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:06:49 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:07:02 PM oh! |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:07:11 PMThere are one-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio apartments. A studio apartment is a very small apartment that combines a bedroom and living room into a single room. |
James(1513399180) 7:07:21 PMwhat is the security deposit for? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:07:32 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:07:41 PMA security deposit is money that a renter pays in the first month only to provide the apartment money to fix things if anything is damaged or broken. If nothing is broken or dirty then the renter will get the money back when they move out. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:08:14 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:08:28 PMWhat is a living room for? What do people do there? |
Alice(864941079) 7:08:48 PMIt's similar in China. |
Alice(864941079) 7:09:04 PMsleep? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:09:28 PMA living room is a room where people sit together and do something like watch television. It is not a bedroom. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:09:34 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:09:50 PMfor watch tv and do things together. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:10:01 PMIn the dialogue the apartment is available for Blanca to move in right away. An apartment that is ready to move into is called “move-in ready.” |
Alice(864941079) 7:10:25 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:10:32 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:10:36 PMGood job George! |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:10:36 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:10:51 PMHow much will Blanca pay for the apartment in the first month? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:11:03 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:11:14 PMHint, remember the security deposit! |
George(1242705207) 7:11:28 PM$650 |
Alice(864941079) 7:11:44 PM950 |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:11:53 PMThat's the first month's rent. Now add the security deposit. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:12:08 PMThat's right Alice! $950 is the total. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:12:22 PMWhat does “at no extra charge” mean? |
George(1242705207) 7:12:26 PMoh all right. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:12:33 PM |
Alice(864941079) 7:13:16 PMyou needn't pay for other expense |
George(1242705207) 7:13:26 PMno any other pay |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:13:38 PMRemember that the manager say that Blanca will get a parking space at no extra charge. Good job! “At no extra charge” means that something is free. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:13:59 PMWhat will Blanca have to pay for every month besides the rent? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:14:23 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:15:04 PMelectricity |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:15:13 PMShe will also have to pay for electricity. Good job George! |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:15:36 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:15:50 PMHere's the second part of the dialog: Blanca: Sounds good. May I come over tomorrow to take a look? Manager: Sure. What time would you like to come? Blanca: How about 10 AM? Manager: Good. May I have your name, please? Blanca: My name is Blanca. Manager: Blanca. I'll see you tomorrow. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:16:17 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:16:26 PMWhat does the phrase “take a look” mean? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:16:36 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:17:03 PMcheck |
Alice(864941079) 7:17:10 PMhave a look at the room before she rent it |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:17:22 PMTo take a look means to check, come and see. Great job guys! |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:17:35 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:17:52 PMHere's a new dialog: Liz: Geez! Your room is like an ice-box! Terri: No, it's not! It's just comfortable. Liz: Yeah, if you're a penguin. Just look at me! Even my goose bumps have goose bumps! Terri: Get outta here! I think you're exaggerating! Liz: No, I'm not? Where's the thermostat? Terri: By the door, on the wall. Liz: No wonder I'm cold! This thing is set at 65?! Terri: Like I said -- perfect! Liz: If you live in Alaska. By the way, where's the shovel? Terri: Why do you need a shovel? Liz: So I can dig us out when it starts snowing in here. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:18:48 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:18:51 PMWhat is another word for ice-box? Hint an ice-box keeps food cold so it lasts longer. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:19:03 PM |
George(1242705207) 7:19:14 PMcold |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:19:40 PMIt's cold in the ice-box, but what's another word for ice-box? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:19:50 PMA refrigerator or a freezer. (Really an ice-box is what people had before the electric refrigerator and freezer were invented. It is an old-fashioned word. Here’s a picture.) |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:20:22 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:20:26 PMCan you tell me, what is the difference between a refrigerator and a freezer? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:20:28 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:20:38 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:21:35 PMA refrigerator keeps food cold and a freezer keeps food frozen. A freezer is colder than a refrigerator. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:21:47 PMWhat is the difference between a lie and an exaggeration? |
George(1242705207) 7:21:53 PMoh i see. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:22:03 PM |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:22:19 PM |
James(1513399180) 7:22:42 PMexaggeration 夸张 |
George(1242705207) 7:23:08 PMlie is more exaggeration |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:23:41 PMThat's good. A lie is more untrue than an exaggeration. |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:23:59 PMHere’s an exaggeration: “The fish I caught was as big as a horse!” Can you write another example of an exaggeration? |
Nick<ecotopian7@hotmail.com> 7:24:02 PM |
